About Face Down.

Face Down is a game for the table. Everyone puts their phone face down. The first person to pick theirs up loses, and every other phone at the table plays a loud sound and says the loser's name out loud.

The host's phone shows a four-letter table code and a QR. Friends with the app scan it or type the code; friends without it join from any phone's browser at playfacedown.com, Android too. Choose a house rule: the loser pays the bill, buys the next round, does the dishes, or something of your own. Add a hold timer if you like. When it runs out, everybody wins.

No accounts. A table lives on our server only while it's open and is deleted six hours after its last activity, and your history stays on your iPhone. The game, joining, the Practice table (you against a simulated player named Robin), house rules, the hold timer and share cards are free. Face Down Plus, an in-app purchase, adds saved tables, nightly streaks, history and four more loser sounds.

Take the full tour at playfacedown.com.

Start a table

A four-letter code, a QR, and everyone's in.

The host taps New table and gets a table code and a QR. Friends with the app scan it or type the code. Friends without it open the table's link in any phone's browser, Android too, with nothing to install. Pick the house rule (the bill, the next round, the dishes, or up to 40 characters of your own) and, if you want one, a hold timer from 15 minutes to 2 hours.

Face Down's lobby for table KQRV: the code in large letters beside its QR code and Scan, tap the link or type the code, then five players around a round table, Ari (you), Priya and Mo with their phones face up and glowing orange, cyan and yellow, Jordan and Sam already face down in green and violet light, 5 at the table, the house rule The loser pays the bill, hold timer choices Open, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hr and 2 hr, and a Phones down button

Phones down

Every player has a color of light.

When the host says phones down, everyone turns theirs over and holds still. Each player's color spills out from under their phone, so the table glows like the lights just went down. Then the round is on, for as long as the table can hold.

Face Down counting in: Phones down. Hold still. above a ring at 2, with five phones face down on a round table, each marked with an initial and spilling its player's light, orange for Ari (you), cyan for Priya, violet for Sam, green for Jordan and yellow for Mo, and the note To end it with everybody winning, pick up and tap Check, please within 3 seconds

Everyone hears who

First to pick up loses. Out loud.

The moment someone picks up, every other phone at the table plays a loud sound and says their name, and the screen floods with red light. The sounds are our own, synthesized on the phone. The house rule lands on the name: Jordan pays the bill.

The loss on everyone else's phone, the screen flooded with red light: Round 3, Table KQRV, JORDAN picked up first, The table held for 23:41, and the house rule Jordan pays the bill, above Play again, Share and Leave buttons

No sneaking a look

Leaving the app counts as picking up.

The phone that picked up gets its own red screen and its own line: you pay the bill. Locking the phone or switching apps counts as picking up too, so there's no quick check of a message and back down again.

The loser's own phone in red light, a phone tipping off the top of the screen: Round 3, You picked up first., You pay the bill., The table held for 23:41., above Play again, Share and Leave buttons

Or everybody wins

Hold out, or call it with Check, please.

Set a hold timer, and when it runs out with every phone still down, everybody wins. Or the host calls it: pick up, tap Check, please within 3 seconds, and the round ends with nobody losing. Every round makes a share card, for Stories or square, with how long the table held and who picked up.

Everybody wins: five phones face up and glowing around the table, Ari (you) in orange, Priya in cyan, Sam in violet, Jordan in green and Mo in yellow, above The table held 1:12:04 and Nobody picked up, with sparks of every player's color drifting, and Play again, Share and Leave buttons
